Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises

PhD

At the doctoral level, the Whitman School offers the PhD in Entrepreneurship, seeking students who can meaningfully advance theory and practice within the discipline of entrepreneurship, and contribute to the pedagogical development of the field. In Whitman's PhD program, entrepreneurship is approached as an interdisciplinary field of study--the program focuses on the manifestation of entrepreneurial behavior in private and public sector contexts, and in both start-up and established organizations. The PhD is designed to be completed over four years and must be pursued on a full-time basis. Requirements include departmental seminars, a minor area, and a statistics sequence.

Enhancing the teaching and research of a Whitman PhD student's experience, the Whitman School is home to 11 research centers and institutes, including the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship. Whitman is also home to the Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship (link to JDE), and regularly hosts major academic conferences. The Whitman School's doctoral program offers graduate fellowships and scholarships, close faculty mentoring, support for student research and presentation of papers, and assistance in the development of teaching skills.
