Degree Programs

Undergraduate The Whitman finance program provides undergraduates with an overall understanding of business operations paired with a strong background in economics on both the micro and macro levels. Along with a theoretical background, Whitman students are well equipped with advanced computer skills, an expertise in mathematics, and a strong understanding of world affairs. At Whitman, students also receive hands-on experience through internships and community service. Many field trips and networking opportunities are also open to students in order to introduce them to the intricate world of financial markets. Developing practical skills in these varied environments allows Whitman students to enter the workforce a cut above the rest, with previous experience making them even more marketable to employers.

Graduate In today’s competitive business world, Whitman students who earn their MBA with a concentration in finance find themselves recruited by some of the best financial agencies and corporations in the world. The MBA concentration in finance provides students with a strong theoretical background while teaching students how to think strategically in a multitude of financial situations. The curriculum includes concentration courses in investments, corporate finance, international finance, and financial institutions and markets. Through the rigorous curriculum, students gain a strong understanding of the principles of finance, how these principles apply in international business, and how to use quantitative techniques to create effective results. MBA candidates may pursue dual specialty areas; as many as 12 elective credits may be selected from SU graduate programs outside of the Whitman School.

PhD When students enroll in the Whitman PhD program in business administration, they are given a choice of five different major areas of study. Students that select finance as their concentration take core courses in financial and strategic management, global finance, and financial institutions and markets. With much of the doctoral program focused on research, graduates of the program leave Whitman as both creators and disseminators of knowledge. Bloomberg terminals located in the Ballentine Investment Institute provide students with the resources necessary for research and the ability to become Bloomberg certified. The PhD program includes a series of prescribed courses in the major area of study, a summer research paper, a comprehensive written examination, and a dissertation proposal to be develop and orally presented to a committee and the academic community.
