APICS Meeting on 2/20: With successful ERP implementations behind them, many managers are anxious to start leveraging their costly integrated information systems to improve performance and profitability. Collaborative, web-based forecasting, planning, and replenishment tools are supposed to help us interact with suppliers and customers more effectively, improving customer service while driving down inventory costs. We now have the information and the computing horsepower to contemplate optimal sourcing, manufacturing, and distribution decisions. According to some experts, we can even consider optimal pricing and channel selection decisions. So, just how far have we come toward realizing some vision of supply chain optimization? How much is hype, and how much is reality? Supply Chain Optimization is the theme of our February chapter meeting, which will be hosted by our APICS student chapter at Syracuse University. The student chapter will convene a panel of experts to discuss the nature of supply chain optimization -- how the problem is defined by various vendors and how those vendors propose to solve the problem. The panel will be moderated by Prof. Fred Easton. Panelists will include APICS Scholars Sandeep Sethi, Lakshmana Kumar Krishna Moorthy, and Evgeny Kaganer. The meeting will be held at SU's Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center, 401 University Place (443-3102) on Wednesday, Februray 20. A social 1/2 hour begins at 5:30, dinner will be served at 6:00, and the panel discussion will convene at 6:45. Industry Speakers in Honor of Professor Wallin, 11/2/01, 2:00-4:00, room 010: The Marketing and Supply Chain faculty have organized a program for faculty, staff and students in honor of Professor Ted Wallin’s retirement. The program will run from 2 to 4 PM in the Schoepflin Auditorium (room 010) in the School of Management. We have asked several former Transportation and Distribution Management grads to provide a short synopsis of their current professional responsibilities and to discuss the issues and challenges that supply chain managers in the industries they are in will face over the next few years. We want to provide faculty and students with an insight into fertile areas for research as well as provide students with an idea of the types of challenges that await them after graduation. Additionally, we can obtain a good idea of the career paths graduates follow after graduation. Finally, this provides a way of recognizing the influence Professor Ted Wallin has had on students over the last 30+ years in a way that will hopefully encourage current students to become more aware of the managerial challenges in the supply chain management area.
