Financial Aid
All admitted full-time Whitman MBA and MS students are eligible for various types of financial aid. Approximately 65 to 75 percent of incoming MBA students are awarded financial aid based on merit through a scholarship or fellowship. Students are reviewed for these awards starting in mid-March and then every six weeks following until the program begins.
Merit-Based Financial Support
Merit-based financial support is awarded based on a student’s admission application. These awards are highly competitive and are available to both U.S. and international full-time students. Merit-based awards are also issued at the beginning of each semester based on merit and faculty and staff recommendations.
- Syracuse University Graduate Fellowships
- Whitman School of Management Scholarships
- Whitman School of Management Assistantships and Recitation Leaders
- External Scholarships and Fellowships
Loan Programs
Whitman full-time MBA students may apply for several loan programs to cover the cost of attendance. Part-time students must be enrolled for at least six credits (half-time status) to be considered for loan programs.
Government Aid
Government aid is issued to students on a non-merit basis and to those that show financial need. Need-based financial aid is utilized by many U.S. graduate students to help supplement the cost of studies.
Employment
Whitman full-time MBA students have the opportunity to seek employment both on and off campus. International students who meet certain requirements are also permitted to seek employment.

Merit-Based Financial Support
Syracuse University Graduate Fellowships
Syracuse University Graduate Fellowships are issued to a select number of students that present outstanding qualifications and the potential to make significant contributions to their future professions. A faculty advisory committee reviews student admission applications and then presents recommendations to the dean of SU’s Graduate School who then selects the Syracuse University Fellows.
The award includes 30 credits for one year of academic study along with a stipend. Additional aid is awarded directly from the Whitman School for the second year. Admission applications must be submitted by the deadline for a student to be eligible for a fellowship.
Whitman School of Management Scholarships
All Whitman scholarships are awarded based on merit and the qualifications shown on a student’s admission application.
Whitman School of Management Assistantships and Recitation Leaders
The Whitman School offers a number of student assistantships, graduate assistantships, and recitation leader positions.
- Teaching Assistants (TA)

This nationally recognized program is designed to help prepare students for their assignment at SU. -
Student Assistants
Students are appointed to work in the school’s administrative offices or work with a Whitman faculty member on assisting with the grading of student homework and papers.
Students Assistants are paid at an hourly rate of $15 per hour and are required to work between 10 and 20 hours per week during the academic year. In addition, Graduate Assistants receive a tuition scholarship and a stipend. The amount of the scholarship and stipend is dependent upon the number of hours per week the student works throughout the year. The tuition rate for a 3-credit course for the 2007-2008 academic year is U.S. $3,036. Candidates for assistantships and recitation leader positions must submit a complete application by the March 1 deadline to be eligible for these awards.
External Scholarships and Fellowships
Applicants are encouraged to apply for the numerous scholarships and fellowships available from foundations and other privately endowed sources including state and federal awards. Consult the Annual Register of Grant Support, Peterson's Grants for Graduate Study, and the Grants Register, which can be found in most libraries and college placement offices in the United States. Employment Information for International Students
Immigration regulations limit part-time employment opportunities for international students. If you have an F-1 visa, you may work on campus without permission from U.S. immigration. You must get a statement from Syracuse University's Center for International Services indicating you are able to work part-time on campus during the academic year and full-time during holidays and summers. This statement is used by SU's payroll department.
Normally, international students with F-1 visas may not be employed off campus during the first calendar year. After the first year (12 months), you may apply to U.S. immigration for permission to work off campus if you can prove an unexpected political or monetary crisis has caused changes in your financial circumstances. If approved, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issues an Employment Authorization Document as proof of employment eligibility.
If you have an exchange-visitor (J-1) visa, you may be given permission to work on or off campus by your sponsor. You must request a letter of permission from your sponsor to be used by employers to authorize employment.
To ask about permission for employment, either on or off campus, and to find out the current regulations about proof of employability, contact Syracuse University's Lillian and Emanuel Slutzker Center for International Services, 310 Walnut Place, Syracuse, NY 13244-2380, USA; telephone 315.443.2457; e-mail ois@syr.edu; fax 315.443.3091.
Employment for Spouses
The Syracuse University Office of Human Resources publishes a weekly listing of job opportunities. Spouses of prospective students may contact this office if they plan to seek employment in the area. Spouses of international students are not permitted to work in the United States.
