Program Requirements

For admission to the iMS in Accounting program, a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a major of 24 credits in accounting is required. Applicants also should have the appropriate background in economics, finance, and quantitative methods.

A variety of elective courses are offered in cooperation with the iMBA program of the Whitman School. Students may also take elective courses from the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University.

The Residency Week
The start of the iMS experience each term

  • Residencies are required and are offered on the SU campus in January, May, and August each year. A residency week begins on a Saturday and concludes after the last class the following Thursday.
  • Optional additional residencies are periodically offered in other cities.
  • During the residency week, students take exams and classes. 
  • Classes are taught by the same faculty who teach in the full-time MS program. Faculty have no other teaching commitments during the residency week.
  • The format of classes is similar to a traditional program, except with more intense class time and concentrated material.
  • Outside of class hours, students spend time reading, working on assignments, attending events, and getting to know classmates and faculty. Networking is an important part of the program.

Between the Residencies
The heart of the iMS experience

  • The iMS program uses BlackBoard technology for course management and communications. This online collaboration tool allows students and faculty to easily maintain contact and share information across time zones
  • Between residencies, students are busy completing assignments and preparing for upcoming exams.
  • Final exams are proctored and are taken on-campus on the first day of the following residency.
