Mayor of Detroit/SU Alum to Speak at the 7th Annual Whitman Day
In honor of the school’s namesake, Martin J. Whitman ’49 BS, the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University will host the 7th Annual Whitman Day on April 7, 2010. The honorable Dave Bing ’66 BA (A&S), mayor of Detroit and former NBA All-Star, will deliver the keynote address. The day kicks off in the Milton Room at 8:30 a.m. with a panel discussion featuring Martin J. Whitman, founder and co-chief investment officer of Third Avenue Funds, and Steven Ballentine ’83 BS, president and CEO of Ballentine Capital Management. Bing will give his address, “Detroit’s Next Chapter: A Team of Change,” at 10:35 a.m. in the Lender Auditorium.
After earning his economics degree at SU, Bing first moved to Detroit in 1966 when he was drafted by the NBA to play for the Detroit Pistons, where he played for nine of his twelve year NBA career. Bing was named to the All-Star team eight times, has been voted one of the top 50 basketball players of all time, and was inducted into the Michigan Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1990. In 1980, Bing was the founder of an automotive supply corporation, Bing Group, where he served as the president and chairman until April 2009. In May 2009, Bing was elected as the 62nd mayor of Detroit.
The 2010 Whitman Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Ballentine. The award honors alumni and friends of Whitman who have made significant contributions to the school, the university, the corporate world, and their communities. As president and CEO of Ballentine Capital Management, an investment management firm he founded in 1989, Ballentine has worked as a portfolio manager and analyst for more than 20 years. Ballentines’s generous gift in 1992 to the Whitman School laid the foundation for building the school’s unique Ballentine Investment Institute which “brings the markets alive to students” and provides Whitman students with an unparalleled education in investment.
“This year, we’re proud to celebrate the Whitman School with such distinguished SU alumni as Dave Bing, Marty Whitman, and Steve Ballentine,” says Melvin T. Smith, dean of the Whitman School. “The Whitman community is inspired every year—indeed, every day—by Marty Whitman’s dedication to superior business practices, commitment to social issues, and incredible passion for learning.”
