Whitman Names Winners in Semi-Annual Student Capstone Competition


Thirty-one student teams representing more than 200 Whitman undergraduate seniors competed in the semi-annual Capstone Business Plan Competition held April 27-28 at the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University.

At the conclusion of both the fall and spring semesters the Whitman School’s Department of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises hosts the Capstone Business Plan Competition. Every Whitman senior participates in the Capstone experience which brings together all the elements of a Whitman education in the context of an original business concept that students conceive and develop as a viable, sustainable, and innovative new venture.

First place and a prize of $500 was awarded to Life Choice Meals, consisting of Eric Rose, Jane Gardner, Ben Cohen, Wen Ying and mentored by John Torrens, assistant professor of entrepreneurial practice. “We believe the Capstone experience is a training camp for life,” notes Jane Gardner. “Life Choice Meals' team members fully intend to pursue options in taking this company to market. We would like to thank professors John Torrens, Ginger Wagner and Joyce Zadzilka along with Jim Vivenzio and Chris Bender. Their support was invaluable.”

Second place and a prize of $300 was awarded to Next Step Care, consisting of Neal Casey, In-hye Erstling, Pete Lugorovski, Koji Peter and was coached by Ken Walsleben, a Whitman adjunct faculty member. Third place and a prize of $200 was awarded to Global Loves, consisting of team members Eunice Kwag, Zion Hwang, Sara Park, Xi Hu, Haihang Xu, and Yifan Wu and mentored by Torrens.

Honorable mentions were given to teams TeleCell and Box Ball. TeleCell team members included Susan Kim, Cindy Ma, Amanda Magnusson, Joseph Schmoll and Jonathan Sutton.  Box Ball team members included Julie Masson, Ahmed Khan, Mitzi Freeman, Sunghyun Bae, Eric Scheib, and Carl Conte. Both teams were coached by Torrens.
