The Whitman School has been designed with student computing needs in mind, from the building wide full high-speed wireless coverage to the many charging stations in classrooms and team rooms. The recommendations above are designed so that students can best take advantage of the environment provided. We recommend a small sub 4.5lbs notebook computer so that students may collaborate wherever they want.
Because there are so many different Windows based computers available our recommendations are designed so that students can find the model that best fits their needs while making sure it will work for required course work.
Students looking for a Whitman recommended configuration can go to the SU Bookstore and view the recommended Dell Vostro 3350 or Dell Latitude E6230. Please feel free to use this system as baseline for further computer shopping if you wish.
Students looking to bring Non-Windows Based computers
Whitman students are provided academic software and computing resources for use on their personal computers whenever possible. Unfortunately, use of provided software and computer resources on non-Windows computers is more complicated and in certain cases not possible.
Students electing to bring an Apple notebook need to have Microsoft Windows installed via Apple Bootcamp, Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. Students who do not own Microsoft Windows, or are unsure if they have an appropriate Microsoft Windows license for this use please contact Whitman Technology Services for assistance.

The wireless network is currently available in all University residential facilities, South Campus apartments, and in many University buildings located both on and off campus. To configure your laptop or other wireless device which supports 802.1x please follow the instructions here.
