Majors

Each student in the Whitman School is required to complete one major field of study.  Choosing your major is an important decision.  To learn about a particular field that may interest you, take the initiative to research the opportunities available to you.

Double Majors
To complete a double major in Whitman, students must complete all of the required courses for each major.  Courses that are applicable to multiple majors may only be used to fulfill the requirements of one major.  Generally, double majors do not have free electives.  If you have already taken free electives at the time that you decide to pursue a double major, you may need to take more than 121 credit hours for the two majors.

You can also complete a second major outside of the Whitman School.  Adding a major outside of management usually increases the number of credits for graduation.  For more information about adding a second major outside of the Whitman School, speak with an academic advisor in the Undergraduate Office.

How to Declare Your Major
Students normally declare their major in the second semester of their sophomore year, before early registration for the first semester of their junior year.  If you are a recipient of TAP aid from New York State, you must declare your major before the junior year or risk losing TAP.  Students who plan to go abroad during their junior year must declare their major before they leave.

Every spring semester, the Undergraduate Office, in partnership with each of the Whitman departments, hosts a Major Fair.  Each department will have faculty and/or student representation to answer questions and be available and you can officially declare your major during the event.
