Accounting
The major program in accounting provides students with the academic training and experience needed to become professional accountants. Job opportunities include careers in public accounting, business and industry, not-for-profit organizations, and government.
Careers in accounting follow one of two branches: professional accounting (certified public accountants) and managerial accounting (controllership). The certified public accountant (CPA) certificate is granted upon the completion of the educational and professional experience requirements of the state in which the accountant wishes to work. In New York State, the applicant must be a graduate of a college with an approved accounting curriculum that includes at least 24 credits of accounting courses. Professional requirements include two years of diversified professional accounting experience, or only one year if an acceptable master’s program is completed.
Major Requirements
To satisfy current New York State requirements, students seeking the CPA certificate must meet the educational requirements of the 120-hour professional program in accounting, outlined below. Students seeking CPA licensure in other states should meet with an advisor to discuss the education requirements for the state in which they seek licensure. Current New York State requirements will change to 150 hours in August 2009.
