Advising
Academic advising is an essential component of a Syracuse University education, and the Whitman School of Management is committed to providing guidance and advice to undergraduate students through individual attention from Whitman faculty advisors. As a Whitman student, you will be assigned an academic advisor once officially enrolled into a degree program. Dedicated advisors will provide you with accurate information and appropriate advice so you can reach your educational goals.
Academic Advising Timeline
Freshman Year
- As a first-year student, you are introduced to academic advising in the Whitman School during orientation when assigned a peer facilitator. The peer facilitator program pairs Whitman upperclassmen with freshman students in a mentoring program to provide guidance to new students on adjusting to campus life.
- SOM 122: You are required to take SOM 122 during your first year. The Whitman peer facilitator assigned to you during orientation acts as a team leader for this class and is available to answer any questions. This general introductory course consists of first-year academic advising including spring semester registration and advising. While taking this course, you will also be assigned a faculty team leader who will act as your faculty advisor until officially enrolled in a major in the Management School.
- In the middle of your first two semesters at Syracuse, you will receive a midterm progress report including feedback from your professors outlining your progress in first-year courses.
Sophomore Year
- Once you have declared your major, you will be assigned a Whitman faculty advisor in your respective department.
- For advising support, visit the Whitman Undergraduate Office in Suite 215. Here you will find additional support through academic advisors that will guide you through scheduling courses to ensure you graduate on time.
Junior and Senior Year
Once assigned a faculty advisor, he/she will stay with you until you are ready to graduate. Advisors act as a support system during your junior and senior years guiding you through all their final decisions as an undergraduate student.
Student Responsibilities
- Contact and schedule an appointment with your advisor at least twice a year
- Prepare for advising sessions and bring appropriate resources or materials
- Become knowledgeable about and adhere to institutional policies, procedures, and degree requirements
- Follow through on actions identified during each advising session taking responsibility for all final decisions
