December 2006
Message from the Dean

The holidays are upon us! I am pleased to say Whitman has completed another successful semester -- our students continue to excel in everything they are involved in, from classes to internships to community outreach. Most recently, 47 student teams competed in Whitman's semiannual Capstone Competition. Three teams made up of 15 Whitman students won cash prizes and the opportunity to represent Whitman in national competitions. This is just another example of the hard work and determination our students demonstrate every day. I hope all of you have a safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to hearing more from you in 2007.

SU's Lubin House

Whitman Marketing Event at Lubin House

The Whitman School will be hosting an event on Thursday, Jan. 4th, 2007, to introduce Whitman marketing students to Whitman alumni who are executives or professionals in the marketing field. The event runs from 5:30-7:00 p.m. and will be held at Syracuse University's Lubin House, located on E. 61st Street in Manhattan. This is an excellent opportunity to meet talented and ambitious Whitman students majoring in marketing and give them some tips on what to expect in their future marketing careers. For more information, please contact Angela Petrucco, Director of the Whitman Career Center, at (315) 443-9611 or apetrucc@syr.edu.

Bill Walsh and Raja Velu

Outstanding Whitman Faculty

Congratulations to Bill Walsh, assistant professor of accounting, who was chosen recently by Whitman students to receive the Oberwager Award. The Oberwager Award is given annually to a faculty member who has positively influenced students outside the classroom. Walsh was selected because of his unflagging committment to Beta Alpha Psi and for his guidance after the sudden death of accounting major Tracy Halpin'06 in January 2006. Congratulations also to Raja Velu, professor of managerial statistics, who was recently elected as a member of the International Statistical Institute, one of the oldest international scientific associations, which seeks to develop and improve statistical methods and their application.

Robert Morgenthau

Whitman Day Scheduled for April 2007

Mark your calendars! The Whitman School is already busy preparing for our fourth annual Whitman Day -- this year, it will be held on April 16 and will feature Robert Morgenthau, the long-time district attorney for New York County, including Manhattan. During his years in office, Morgenthau has developed a reputation as an effective opponent of tax-fraud, organized crime, corruption, and white-collar crime. Please continue to check here for more information about our fourth annual Whitman Day. We look forward to seeing you there!

Winners -- Whitman Web Survey

Thanks to everyone who participated in the recent Whitman web survey. Drawn at random, the winners of the survey prizes were Michel Benaroch, professor of management information systems in the Lubin School of Accounting, and James Le Mon'87 MBA, who works for Lord Abbett, an independent money management firm. We appreciate everyone's input on the Whitman website -- please stay tuned for improvements!
