Mission of the Africa Business Program

This conference will focus on the pivotal role of entrepreneurship in Africa’s economic development, an area which remains largely understudied.

The conference, hosted by the Whitman School’s Africa Business Program and co-organized by Makerere University Business School, is scheduled for April 1-3, 2010.

Keynote speakers:
Marilou Uy, sector director of the Africa Region's Financial and Private Sector Development Department, World Bank
Lemma W. Senbet, the  William E. Mayer Chair Professor of Finance at the Smith School of the University of Maryland

The mission of the Africa Business Program in the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University is to:

  • Facilitate partnerships between businesses in Central New York and countries in Africa
  • Enhance the business community’s readiness of entering into business relationships with Africa
  • Promote faculty research and interest in business in Africa
  • Increase Africa-related knowledge among students

The program, formally launched in October 2008, is the joint responsibility of the Kiebach Center for International Business Studies within the Whitman School, the Central New York Technology Development Organization (CNYTDO), and the Central New York International Business Alliance (CNYIBA). It is also supported by the County of Onondaga Division of Economic Development, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the New York State Empire State Development, and the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce. The Africa Business Program is made possible through a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s International Business and Education program.
