Don’t miss the boat! Most career opportunities are recruited sooner than you think. Below is a general timeline for the various processes. Please note that opportunities are available at other times, but the majority fall under this timing.
As soon as the fall semester begins, the full-time hiring process is underway. Be sure to return to campus with your resume and cover letter polished and your list of target companies in hand. Companies will often host "Welcome Back" events as soon as the semester starts. In mid to late September, career workshops are available to help you prepare for Whitman Career Fair Week in late September and on-campus interviews in October. Most full-time deadlines are within the first two months of school, so be sure you’re on top of your game and ready to impress. Full-time offers are generally extended by the end of fall semester after second round interviews have been conducted off campus at corporate offices.
Just as full-time hiring gets underway as soon as fall semester begins, the same is true for internship hiring in the spring.
All majors and disciplines—except for accounting—generally seek applications in the January/February timeframe and will have most of their on-campus interviews completed by spring break in March. It is a good idea to leave campus at the end of fall semester with a solid plan in place for executing your internship search. Seek out the assistance of the Whitman Career Center team to successfully launch your search.
If you’re seeking an accounting internship, you should have your search process underway in the fall. The timeline generally follows the same one as the full-time process, wrapping up by the end of the semester. Please also note that most CPA accounting firms are seeking interns after the fourth/senior year as they anticipate students will return to school for a fifth year to complete a master’s degree to meet the 150-hour requirement for New York state CPA licensure.
Depending on the program you are applying for, you will find that applications are often considered in rounds, with the first deadline often being in November for the following academic year; so, just like with the job search process, it is to your benefit to be working one year in advance with your planning. You will usually find out if you have been admitted approximately one month after the application deadline. Final deadlines are often in April, but you should consult the specific programs you are interested in to be sure you don’t miss out on important steps in the process. You should also plan your timeline so that you have ample time to prepare for and take the GMAT or other required graduate school entrance exams.
Career Search While Studying Abroad
The experience of studying abroad can greatly enhance the business knowledge and life experience that you can bring to a company. Keep in mind that you still must generally follow the timelines noted above—even while abroad—to obtain the opportunity you are seeking. Some companies will be willing to work with you while you are abroad to conduct interviews via video conferencing, however other companies will require an in-person meeting and may or may not be able to alter their hiring timeline to accommodate you. Please keep this in mind when planning your time abroad and know that there are some opportunities you may be missing as a result of not being on campus. Online resources such as OrangeLink, Blackboard, and email communications should still be widely used while you are out of the country, and the Whitman Career Center team is still available to assist you at any time.
