As Associate Provost, Professor Kingma leads the Syracuse Campus-Community Entrepreneurship Initiative -- a collaborative partnership made possible by a five-year, $3 million grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The Syracuse Campus-Community Entrepreneurship Initiative builds on the key tenets of Scholarship in Action by encouraging faculty and students throughout Central New York to work with communities of experts across disciplines and geographic boundaries to foster entrepreneurial education and innovation in three key areas -- technology, neighborhood and arts entrepreneurship -- while utilizing three experiential sites in the region: the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems headquarters; The Warehouse and the Arts Quarter in downtown Syracuse; and the South Side Innovation Center.
As a Professor and Associate Dean in the iSchool, Kingma has worked with the faculty, staff, and students to start the award winning Web-based Information Science Education (WISE) consortium; the Preparing Librarians for Urban Schools (PLUS) program; the Women in Technology (WIT) student group; the Orange Council for Leadership in the Information Professions (Orange CLIP) employer advisory board; and the Systems Assurance Institute, an NSA-designated center of excellence in information assurance. He has been involved in several academic initiatives at the iSchool including programs in information security management, digital libraries, and specializations in web development, e-commerce & e-government, database management, information security, IT project management, and network management.
Professor Kingma's research is on the economics of information. His research interests include the economics of online education, digital libraries, scholarly publishing, and library and nonprofit management. He has published five books, numerous articles, and frequently presents at national and international conferences in economics, distance education, and information and library science. Professor Kingma's publications have appeared in The Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, D-Lib Magazine, College & Research Libraries, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, and other professional journals in economics and information science.
