| Doctoral Studies in Entrepreneurship at Syracuse University
Purpose
To produce leading scholars and teachers in the rapidly growing field of entrepreneurship.
Focus
Entrepreneurship is approached as an interdisciplinary field of study; the program focuses on the manifestation of entrepreneurial behavior in private and public sector contexts, and in both start-up and established organizations.
Requirements
The Ph.D. is designed to be completed over four years, and must be pursued on a full-time basis. Approximately 42 credit hours are required, depending upon the student’s graduate background. Requirements include departmental seminars, a minor area, and a statistics sequence. Students are also required to teach in years 2 and 3.
Environment
Entrepreneurship is a core element in the mission statement of the Whitman School of Management. We are one of only a handful of schools with an academic Department of Entrepreneurship, with fourteen faculty members involved in our nationally ranked entrepreneurship program. The Whitman School is home to seven research centers and institutes, including the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship, publishes two major academic journals, and regularly hosts major academic conferences.
Support
The Whitman School is highly supportive of doctoral students; assistance includes graduate fellowships and scholarships, close faculty mentoring, support for student research and presentation of papers, and assistance in the development of teaching skills.
History
The doctoral program in the Whitman School was created in 1965. Built on a tradition of innovation and excellence, the program is small, selective and rigorous. Graduates have achieved distinction in many leading universities; The Entrepreneurship and Strategy program commences in Fall 2004.
