CIE PROGRAMING

Students in the CIE actively participate in a systematic portfolio of programs and are evaluated based on their contributions and performance. This starts in the first week with a complimentary brain functioning evaluation through the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument and ends in the D’aniello trophy, which is awarded to the highest achieving student “Pride” (team) at the end of each semester and school year.
This programming is designed to further the important goal of “the residence hall as an incubator for thought and action.” Below is a sampling of elements that are built into the programming for a given semester:

EEE 110/PAF 200 “Discovering the Innovator Within"

A one credit/semester each semester course cross listed with the Whitman School of Management and the Maxwell School in Liberal Arts is taught in the CIE classroom, during which lecture, interactive exercises and experiential learning are utilized. Generally team-based, the students are focused on creativity in generating ideas and innovation in implementing their ideas.

The “Provocateur Series”

A regularly scheduled event with faculty representing different disciplines on campus (e.g. Liz Liddy from the School of Information Studies on technology and business start-ups and outside lecturers (e.g., Jeff Stamp of Eureka Ranch and Red Dog Martin of Proctor & Gamble) that challenges the student’s perceptions and thought processes.

Mentoring Sessions Weekly scheduled time with the CIE Faculty Advisor and outside entrepreneurs, in which there is a free flow of thought and discussion about students’ entrepreneurial ideas.

Social Entrepreneurship

There has been significant engagement of the student Prides as part of a long term initiative with the Falcone Center outreach arm of the EEE Department, to implement a model for economic redevelopment for the Syracuse Southside. This has included CIE student introduction to business elements and innovative community service through team-based pairing with actual early stage businesses and their entrepreneurs, through consulting and Asset Mapping for the Southside, initiation of internet marketing and implementation of discreet tasks to assist Southside entrepreneurs to reach their goals.

Entrepreneurship at the Movies Periodic showing of films with themes of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship preceded and concluded by group discussions led by Faculty members.

Social events White water rafting retreat, open house parties and competitions

Ideation Lab Held 5 times a semester, this interactive Lab explores methods for the students to explore and learn new ways to think about, see and implement idea growth and problem-solving opportunities.
It is through the depth and breadth of the program that CIE students are immersed in and see the larger picture of innovation and entrepreneurship, which is what we believe makes the CIE unique among existing programs and qualified to have been recognized as the 2004-2005Outstanding Learning Community on the SU campus.
