Event Description:

The EEE Seminar Series continues with Chris Marquis, Cornell University, who will present, "Future-Time Framing: The Effect of Language on Corporate Future Orientation." The abstract is below:

We examine how variation in corporate future-oriented behavior such as CSR and R&D investments could partially stem from characteristics of the languages spoken across the globe. Building on research in linguistics that shows that obligatory future-time-reference (FTR) in a language reduces the cognitive importance of the future, we develop a future-time framing perspective that is rooted in the literatures on organizational categorization, framing and attention. Our theory and hypotheses focus on how companies with strong-FTR languages may engage less in future-oriented behaviors, and this effect is attenuated by exposure to multilingual environments. Examining more than 10,000 large companies from 114 countries over a time span of 1999-2014, we find support for our theory.
