Gauri comments on WSYR-TV9 regarding retail stores response to Black Friday competition

Dinesh Gauri, associate professor of marketing at the Whitman School of Management, was quoted in a story last week on Channel 9 WSYR in which he offered insight as to why large department stores are opening their doors to customers earlier every year in preparation for Black Friday. Along with JCPenney and Macy’s, Kohls has announced its plan to open all stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, four hours before the usual start of the notorious shopping holiday. Gauri says pure competition is driving stores do this because, if stores don’t open up for shoppers, they risk losing out on a significant amount of revenue during the four-day shopping weekend.
