Q. I do not have administrative rights but I would like to pre-configure my laptop for broadband wireless(AirOrangeX) while I am on campus.
A. Pre-configuration of machines for Syracuse University's 802.1x wireless network can be completed by following the "Wireless Computing" instructions.

Pre-Configuration of your Laptop

Students who plan on bringing laptops and do not have administrative rights should bring their laptop and these instructions to their IT support for pre-configuration.

Pre-configuration of machines for Syracuse University's 802.1x wireless network can be completed by visiting https://setupz.syr.edu/tools/downloads.html.
Note: Users may see a message about certificate errors. Users of Internet Explorer may see "There is a problem with this website's security certificate", select "Continue to this website". Users of FireFox may see "Secure Connection Failed", select "Or you can add an exception."

  • Users must first manually configure Syracuse University's AirOrangeX WiFi. AirOrangeX is a secure wireless network following the 802.1x specifications. Instructions for Microsoft Vista and Microsoft XP can be found at the above URL. Once configured AirOrangeX will automatically log users into the wireless network when in range.
  • After manual configuration of the AirOrangeX network, users must install our wireless network's network access control (NAC) tool. This tool confirms that all users computers meet the minimum specs outlined in the Syracuse University network usage policy. Run the file from the download site (rather than saving it localling and running it) and install the tool.

If for any reason you or your IT support staff have questions or issues relating to these instructions please contact Stuart Rotblat at Whitman School's Technology Services, 315-443-3054 or srotblat@syr.edu.
