Partnership with The Post-Standard Provides Great Opportunity for Students

The Ballentine Investment Institute, in collaboration with the Finance department has partnered with the local Post-Standard to provide research on companies of local interest on a quarterly basis. Students taking the Finance Independent Studies on equity research have the opportunity to generate research reports and write executive summaries on companies listed in the Syracuse Portfolio of The Post-Standard Business section. The reports will consist of a brief synopsis of each company’s progress for each quarter, as well as earnings estimates for the next quarter and other company specific analysis.

The Post-Standard will give students recognition by crediting them for their quarterly summaries. In addition, the complete research reports will be posted on the Ballentine Investment Institute web site. Jordan Barker, a freshman finance major interested in taking the independent study, is very enthused by the newly formed partnership. “Having large numbers of people read your work is beneficial for networking,” said Jordan. “Someone reading the Syracuse Portfolio might be a potential employer.”

Partnering with the local paper benefits Syracuse University as well as the Syracuse area at large. The M.J. Whitman School of Management has shown great interest in the Syracuse community, making a concerted effort to team up with The Post-Standard. Investors reading The Post-Standard will have the advantage of knowing their companies in and out through detailed research reports SU students will provide. Syracuse University also benefits by branching out and spreading its wings. The unification enables SU to showcase their students’ hard work and ability in a professional arena.

The Ballentine Investment Institute along with the Finance department is offering students a wonderful opportunity to use what they have learned in a “hands on” environment. Students contributing to the Syracuse Portfolio will receive academic credit, and the experience will prove to be a great resume builder. In addition, students enrolled in the Finance Independent Study will become Bloomberg Certified. The independent studies are available every semester and recruitment has begun for the summer course.
