Mel and Patricia Stith to receive Syracuse University 2013 Orange Circle Award
Melvin T. Stith, dean of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, and Patricia Stith, the University’s assistant provost for equity and inclusion, have been selected to receive the 2013 Orange Circle Award from Syracuse University. The award, introduced in 2009, annually recognizes SU students, alumni, and friends who believe in the power of philanthropy and have done extraordinary things for others in their communities.
The Stiths are well-known in the Syracuse and academic communities for their service and dedication to local, regional, and national organizations including United Way, Vera House, Crouse Hospital, and The PhD Project. In 2011, Mel and Patricia endowed the Stith Graduate Student Fund at SU, which provides financial support for full-time African American, Hispanic and Native American doctoral students. Additionally, through their support of their undergraduate alma mater, Norfolk State University, the University named its alumni house for them in fall 2006.
As an assistant provost, Patricia supports students in graduate programs across the University—with a special focus on doctoral students from underrepresented groups. Melvin has served as dean of the Whitman School since 2005. Last spring, he announced his intention to retire at the conclusion of the 2013 spring semester.
The Stiths will be presented with the award at a ceremony be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 19, in the Life Sciences Auditorium, room 001, on the SU campus. The Orange Circle Awards will be presented immediately after SU Trustee Howard Phanstiel delivers the 2nd annual Phanstiel Lecture as part of Philanthropy Week. A luncheon will follow. All current students are encouraged to attend.
“[The Stith’s] leadership and generosity, collectively and individually, are an inspiration to us all and we will miss [them],” says David R. Murray, SU’s executive director of special campaigns and initiatives.
Recipients are selected by SU students, staff, and alumni. Read more about the SU Orange Circle Awards here: http://www.syr.edu/alumni/awards/orangecircle/.
