Marketing team to compete in Indiana NTSC case competition October 10-11

For the fourth consecutive year, The Martin J. Whitman School of Management will send a team of four talented marketing students to the National Sales Team Competition (NSTC) to be held October 10-11 in Bloomington, Indiana. This large and prestigious case competition is co-sponsored by the Center for Global Sales Leadership at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and Altria Corporation.

This year’s team was selected based on their excellent performances in Professor Ray Wimer’s sales management class. They are: Sydney Carter (‘14 MAR), Robert Daw (‘14 MAR), Russell Suskind (‘14 EEE), and Jennifer Swirnow (‘14 MAR and Retail Mgmt.).

“I’m honored to accompany the team to the competition, I know they will represent Whitman well. Although the competition this year will be intense—some other schools are sending two or even three teams—they will do a great job,” says Professor of Marketing Practice Scott Lathrop.

The team will spend two weeks analyzing the case and developing their recommendations, while Professors Ray Wimer and Sue Smith, both experts in sales, will help the team fine-tune their presentation skills.

Whitman won third place two of the past three years, in addition to two individual awards:  Rob Zaccaria won the overall award for team leadership in 2011, and Marlin Harper won the overall award for quantitative case analysis last year. This is significant considering the fact that more than 100 students compete each year and only three individual recognitions are awarded.

This year, 21 schools, including Indiana University, Michigan State and the University of Washington, will be competing at the NSTC.

Professor Fran Tucker and the Marketing Department have sponsored the travel arrangements. Hotel rooms and all meals are provided by the Kelley School and Altria.
