Syracuse MBA Experiential Learning Opportunities

Full-time Syracuse MBA students complete six credits of experiential learning through at least two distinct experiences. You can complete your requirements in a number of ways, including internships for independent study credit or a course-based experience offered as an elective in your concentration. These opportunities allow you to gain experience in your field and, for our international students, they give you exposure to American business practices. These opportunities are in addition to the applied assignments and cases that you will complete as part of your course work. Whitman’s close community connections and broad alumni base offer a number of opportunities for experiential learning.

Experiential Courses

Courses are specifically designed to build experiential portfolios beyond the core curriculum. One of the more popular experiential courses is Lean Six Sigma. In this course, students are grouped into small project teams and assigned to a local company or organization where they will apply their Lean Six Sigma knowledge to real-world problems throughout the duration of the course. Projects include both Lean and Six Sigma projects. Some examples of prior projects include productivity/efficiency improvements in reducing machine setup times, factory work cell layout improvements, defect reduction, inventory reduction, time and productivity improvements in service organizations to name just a few. Area clients have included: Cxtech, Inficon, National Grid, JMA Wireless, Marquardt Switches, Indium, Welch Allyn, GE Handheld, Bitzer-Scroll, Stickley-Audi Co., Agrana Fruits, Oneida Air Systems, Hoffman Hotdogs, Frazer & Jones, and Aspen Dental, among many others.

Internships & Co-ops

In our traditional two-year MBA program, you typically complete an internship during the summer between the first and second academic years. There is additional flexibility in the second year of your program for an additional internship or co-op experience.

Global Projects & Experiences

As a global business school, we have a range of courses and projects that address important business issues around the globe. Some of these courses involve you even traveling for an immersion class experience. Recent trips have been to Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Our proximity to a rich network of contacts in New York City allows us to provide transformational learning experiences there.

Case and Business Plan Competitions

You’ll compete as part of a team to demonstrate strategic thinking and critical analysis skills to deliver presentations in competitions across the country. Some of these competitions, such as the Orange Tank competition and Panasci Business Plan competition, can even provide substantial financial support for your startup business.

Community Engagement

Our students continually give back to the local community. The Whitman School of Management plays a leadership role in the Syracuse community, including overseeing the South Side Innovation Center and the WISE Women’s Business Center. We also partner with other organizations such as the Blackstone LaunchPad and Centerstate CEO for other opportunities to apply your learning to real-world situations.
