Workshop On Stakeholders, Property Rights and Entrepreneurship

With generous support from the E.M. Kauffman Foundation, the Institute for an Entrepreneurial Society at the Whitman School of Management sponsored a workshop on Oct. 26-28, 2023 on “Stakeholders, property rights and entrepreneurship.” The workshop, organized by Whitman professors David Lucas and Maria Minniti, drew 35 junior scholars about half of whom were Ph.D. students. “The experience was truly transformative and I feel immensely privileged to have been a part of such an enriching event,” Ph.D. Candidate Qifan Chen of the University of Nevada commented.

IES’s mission is to produce high-quality evidence-based research on the political economy of entrepreneurship, educate future thought leaders in the field, and engage the academic community in explorations of the entrepreneurial society. Ileana Maldonado-Bautista, assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship at Iowa State University said, “I left feeling inspired by the great projects presented.”

The workshop’s theme has become important in research on entrepreneurship, corporate governance, and, importantly, public policy. In fact, the role and opportunities for entrepreneurial activity are directly and importantly influenced by property rights. “The IES workshop brought together a fantastic group of young and talented researchers with some leading scholars in the field to discuss timely and important topics such as the impact of regulation on AI and the commercial drone industry. We are delighted to contribute to these important conversations,” Maria Minniti, IES director, shared.

Workshop participants had the opportunity to present their research and receive feedback from a distinguished group of senior figures in entrepreneurship. This included Peter Klein, the Caruth Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Baylor University; Per Bylund, the Pope Chair in Entrepreneurship at Oklahoma State University; and Mark Packard, research director of Florida Atlantic University’s Madden Center for Value Creation.
